Steel is essential to our society. Due to its structural efficiencies, dura- bility and recyclable capabilities steel is a viable sustainable material of choice, and its demand is on the rise.
Through industry cross-collaboration and communication, efficiency in resource use and operations and intelligent and innovation design, the steel industry can continually reduce its carbon emissions to pro- vide a more sustainable, low carbon material.
Sustainable development is a worldwide priority. The Japan
Steel Institute is committed to facilitating the steel industry
to progress environmental, social and economic sustainability
throughout the entire supply chain.
Forging a
Greener
Future
Rooted in the Japanese philosophy of mottainai — a deep respect for resources — we pursue carbon neutrality through hydrogen steelmaking, closed-loop recycling, and nature-harmonized manufacturing.
Mottainai — Zero Waste
Every offcut, every drop of cooling water, every joule of heat is recaptured. Our Osaka mill achieves 98.6% material utilization through precision-cut optimization and full scrap reintegration.
Monozukuri — Craft of Making
Quality and sustainability are the same pursuit. Superior process control means less rework, less waste, less energy per ton — the Japanese way of manufacturing excellence.
Kyosei — Living Together
Harmonious coexistence with nature and community. Every facility maintains a green buffer zone, and we partner with local watersheds for ecological restoration.
Closed-Loop Steel Recycling
Our electric arc furnaces process 92% recycled scrap input. Every pipe we produce is 100% recyclable at end-of-life. We reintegrate mill scale, grinding swarf, and turning chips back into the melt cycle — true circular steelmaking.
Hydrogen-Ready Steelmaking
Following Japan's COURSE50 consortium, we are transitioning from coal-based reduction to hydrogen direct reduction (H₂-DRI). Our pilot shaft furnace at Mito Works targets 50% lower CO₂ by 2030 with full hydrogen conversion by 2040.
Water Stewardship
Closed-circuit cooling systems recirculate 97% of process water. Advanced treatment plants return clean water to local rivers exceeding JIS discharge standards. Zero-liquid-discharge systems are being installed at all seamless pipe mills.
Biodiversity & Green Zones
Every Mito facility maintains a satoyama-inspired green buffer — native trees, wetland filtration, and wildlife corridors. Our Osaka Works hosts 12 hectares of restored coastal forest, providing carbon sequestration and storm surge protection.
Renewable Energy Transition
Solar arrays across all mill rooftops generate 18 MW. We procure certified green electricity through Japan's GX framework and have signed long-term PPAs for offshore wind power in the Kobe Bay corridor.
Supply Chain Transparency
Full EN 10204 3.2 traceability from ore source to delivered pipe. SuMPO EPD environmental product declarations on all product families. We require Scope 3 emissions reporting from every tier-1 supplier.
Environmental Vision Established
Published our first Environmental Vision aligned with COP21 Paris targets. Committed to 30% CO₂ reduction by 2030 from 2013 baseline.
EAF Modernization
Commissioned high-efficiency electric arc furnaces at Mito Works, increasing recycled scrap usage from 60% to 85% and reducing energy intensity by 22%.
Zero Landfill Achievement
Reached zero-waste-to-landfill status across all domestic manufacturing sites. Mill byproducts converted to construction aggregate and cement raw material.
Green Steel Certification
Launched Mito GreenPipe™ product line with SuMPO EPD certification — mass-balance verified reduced-emission seamless pipes for environmentally conscious procurement.
Hydrogen Pilot Commissioned
Activated H₂-DRI pilot shaft furnace under NEDO Green Innovation Fund partnership. Achieved 33% emission reduction in test operations — matching Japan's national best.
Target: 50% CO₂ Reduction
Scale hydrogen steelmaking to production levels. Complete solar + wind PPA covering 60% of electricity demand. Achieve Science Based Targets (SBTi) validation.
Carbon Neutrality
Full transition to hydrogen-based steelmaking with 100% renewable energy. Net-zero across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. A legacy of steel without compromise.
ISO 14001
Environmental Management System — all manufacturing sites certified and externally audited annually.
SuMPO EPD
Environmental Product Declarations for all seamless pipe families — verified lifecycle carbon footprint data.
SBTi Committed
Science Based Targets initiative — near-term 2030 targets submitted for validation on 1.5°C pathway.
GX League Member
Japan's Green Transformation League — committed to emissions trading and transparent carbon accounting.
